$59.70 worth of groceries at Shaw’s for $0.00 out of pocket

Friday, June 5th, 2009

shawslogoI just have to tell you about my exciting trip to Shaw’s today!  Earlier, I transferred a prescription and received a $25.00 gift card.  The sale wasn’t exciting last week, so instead of using it to save just $25.00 off the price of my groceries, I held onto it.  This week, I found the sale to be much more exciting.  I found I could stretch that gift card beyond its limits!   By combining sale prices, promotions, and coupons, I was able to bring home $59.70 worth of groceries for free. Here’s what I did in 2 transactions!

Transaction 1:

  • 3 Cheerios - $2.00 each - sale price
  • 4 Chex Mix - $1.67 each - sale price
  • 4 Gogurt - $2.50 each - sale price
  • 1 Yoplait Yogurt cups - $2.50 each - sale price

I used the following coupons - ALL available from my coupon link in my sidebar!!  Set your printer to “draft” to conserve ink.

  • $1.00/3 Cheerios
  • $.80/ 2 Gogurt - doubled to $1.60. I used 2
  • $.40 Yoplait yogurt cups - doubled to $.80
  • $.50 Chex Mix - doubled to $1.00.  I used 4.  Note:  The print limit is 2.  You need access to 2 computers to print 4.

The money:

  • Total before coupons:  $25.17.
  • Preferred savings: $10.21 (store sales)
  • Total after coupons:  $16.17, which I put on the free $25.00 gift card I got earlier.
  • Zero $$ out of pocket!
  • I received a $10.00 coupon good on my next order because I spent $25.00 on eligible items!!  It figures in the price BEFORE the coupons, maximizing your savings!

Transaction #2:

  • 2 pints blueberries $3.99 / BOGO sale
  • 6 2 liter Caffeine free Diet Cokes $.88 - sale price
  • 2 Thomas English Muffins $.88 - sale price

The money:

  • Total:  $11.33
  • I used my $10.00 coupon from above
  • I put the $1.33 on my free gift card
  • Zero $$ out of pocket!
  • Preferred savings: $12.73

How I got my total savings figure:  I added my coupon savings, my preferred savings, and the amounts put on the gift card.  This is the money I would have spent had I bought these items at full retail value.   Could you imagine??

Since I bought such large amounts of yogurt and Chex Mix, I thought I’d tell you what I do with it.  My son loves yogurt in any form, and Chex Mix is a real treat.  I put the Gogurts in the freezer.  They are delicious frozen, and make a wonderful warm weather treat.  The Chex Mix gets stored in the pantry and I’ll pull out a bag occasionally for a treat.  I’ll admit, I opened one bag right now and am munching as I type!!  But the rest are for my son!  The Cheerios are a breakfast staple, and my husband lives on Dt. Coke, so whenever I find a deal, I stock up.  The blueberries are also a treat for my son, and he won’t have any trouble eating 2 pints before they go bad!  2 packages of English muffins are hard to eat before they get stale, so I toss one in the freezer for later.  Thaw them in the fridge, and they are delicious toasted!

Tell me…  How have you taken advantage of your $25.00 gift card?  What great deals have you discovered at Shaw’s lately?

“Grilled” Chicken Tenderloin

Monday, June 1st, 2009

This chicken recipe is delicious!   Add a baked potato and some veggies for a complete meal.

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
  • 1 cup zesty Italian dressing
  • 2 tsp lime juice
  • 3 tsp honey
Method:
  • Mix marinade, and add chicken strips. Marinate, refrigerated,  for at least an hour.
  • Pour everything into a large skillet and cook over medium heat until the liquid evaporates and remaining marinade is thick and carmelized.
  • Turn every 10 minutes or so. Coat each piece of chicken by rubbing it around in the carmelized marinade in the bottom of the pan.
  • Takes approximately 40 minutes.

Yuuuuummy!!

Frugal Notes:
  • This recipe is easy to make ahead and freeze.  Just thaw it out in the morning, and it’ll be ready to cook for dinner.  It marinates during the thawing process.
  • Make it once, and if your family loves it, next time make it in bulk and freeze it in meal-sized portions when there is a sale on chicken.  Don’t use raw chicken from your freezer and refreeze it raw.
  • I only buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts.  They can be expensive, so whenever there is a sale ($1.99/lb or less), I buy a lot and freeze them.  Some I freeze individually, some I cook, and cube, and then freeze.  I’ll be exploring this in future posts.
  • The Italian dressing can often be purchased for pennies buy using sales combined with coupons.

How I MADE MONEY at Walgreens today!

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I am going to show you how I spent $8.65 at Walgreens today and came home with $12.00 in Register Rewards!  I did a total of 6 transactions.  I could have done this with much less out of pocket by using fillers that were at least $0.25, but I really wanted the Jif peanut butters!  To date, this is the best deal I’ve found on Jif, which is the only brand my family will eat, and we eat a lot of it.

I bought 4 Jif peanut butters, 2 Crystal Light drink mixes, and 6 Ecotrin asprins.   What’s funny is that we don’t use Ecotrin, nor does anyone else in my family that I’ve polled, but since Walgreens was paying me $2.00 per box to bring it home, I figured I might as well do it!!!  If I can’t give them to someone who uses them, I will donate them to Manna or the local shelter.

New to couponing?  Go here for an overview!

Here’s how I made money and brought home some great additions to my stockpile:

Best Ever Pizza Dough

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

In our family, we have pizza every Friday night.  We spread out a blanket on the floor and have a pizza picnic while we watch a movie.

I used to buy pizza from a delicious, local pizza parlor.  Until one time when I spent $30.00 on 2 pizzas, drinks, and chips.  $30.00!  I couldn’t believe it!!

We had received a bread machine for our wedding almost 12 years ago.  I dug it out, modified a recipe that came with it, and my creation was an instant success.  We like the taste of this pizza better than the take out, and I like it even more because of it’s affordability!

Here’s my modified version of the crust. Feel free to experiment with it and have fun!

  • 1 1/3 c water
  • 2 tbs olive oil
  • 1 tsp or more of fresh, minced garlic
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 c whole wheat flour
  • 2 c white flour
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • Sometimes I add parsley flakes and basil.
  • I’ve been know to add a bit of parmesean cheese, too.
  • Sometimes I add more whole wheat and less white flour. Depends on my mood!

I put it all in the bread machine. It mixes and rises in 1 1/2 hours. If you don’t have a bread machine, I’m sure a cookbook would tell you how to mix and rise dough. I’ve never done it without the machine, but if you have to, it’ll be worth the effort.

The dough either makes one really thick crust, or 2 thinner ones, which is what I usually do, as we like leftovers for the next day.
I put cornmeal down on the pizza stone and roll out the crust. This is so it doesn’t stick, and it adds a nice crunchy texture.

Add sauce, cheese, toppings. I used shredded cheddar and shredded mozzarella. I also use turkey pepperoni instead of regular. Less fat, and much more flavor.

Cook at 500 degrees for 15-20 min.

Frugal notes:

  • I often put bacon, hamburger, onions, green and red peppers on my side of the pizza. Whenever I use these items in a recipe, I save a bit for my pizza toppings and freeze them.  I don’t miss the small amounts in the recipe I’m making.
  • On pizza night, I just pull out my container, take the frozen veggies and/or meat and add them to my side of the top before cooking.
  • I enjoy the frugality of not having to purchase a variety of toppings just for my side of the pizza, and the convenience of having choices all prepared and ready to use.
  • Since we make this every week, I buy my shredded cheeses in bulk.  Those small bags of pizza cheese cost a fortune!  I just buy a huge bag of mozzarella cheese, and a large bag of white American cheese.  I just grab some cheese from each bag and toss it on the pizza.
  • Some day, I am going to buy the cheese in large blocks, which is even more affordable, and shred it myself.
  • Cheese keeps a long time in the refrigerator, I’ve never had it go bad on me.  I’ve also successfully frozen the cheese if you are worried about it.

Let me know if you try it and how it turns out!!
